Fair Friday… The Whidbey Island Fair begins next week, and in honor of it, here’s a throwback to the year 1916 when the Island County Fair was held up in Coupeville and featured baseball and softball games between Langley and Coupeville.
Langley’s own Lucy Bainter (daughter of Ike and Kittie Bainter) is shown in the photos as the catcher, and others in the photo, but not identified, were schoolteacher Hannah Jacobsen and Grace McGinnis. (If you can identify other players, please let us know.)
Baseball games between Langley and Coupeville highlighted the Fair’s entertainment.
In 1916 the men played on Saturday, and Langley lost with a score of 9 to Coupeville’s 22.
On Friday, which was designated Schoolchildren’s Day and drew a crowd of almost 2,000, the ladies did battle with bats and balls and, according to W. T. Howard, editor of the Times, “the ladies played much better than some thought they would but the Coupeville girls had received the most practice and carried off the honors with a score of 20 to 6. Star players for Langley were Lucy Bainter Cattron, catcher, Grace McGinnis, pitcher, and Hannah Jacobsen, first base.”
